Ludwig Mendelssohn

Arnold Ludwig Mendelssohn was born December 26, 1855, in Ratibor, Germany (now Racibórz, Poland). He is the son of Wilhelm Mendelssohn, the second cousin of the famous Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. At first he studied law in Tübingen, but he switched to music in 1877 in Berlin. Just three years later he was an organist and music teacher in Bonn. He became music director in Bielefeld in 1882 and moved to teach at the Konservatorium in Kiln in 1885. He was married to Maria Cauer the same year. He moved again to Darmstadt in 1891 to teach and serve as a music master. He was there until 1912, when he moved to teach at the am Hoch'schen Konservatorium in Frankfurt. He became a member of the Berlin Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in 1919. His compositions include chamber music, three operas (Elsi, die seltsame Magd - 1896, Der Bärenhäuter - 1900, Die Minneburg - 1909), sacred choral works, and various other pieces. He died in Darmstadt on February 18, 1933.

I did not find much information online about this composer. The sources I used were bach-cantatas.com and wikipedia.org, which I accessed June 29, 2016.
