Practice Planner
Recording and reporting your practicing can help your musical development immensely. This page is meant to give you guidelines for what to record each week between lessons. You can either remember these items and write them down in a notebook or you can purchase a practice planner to help you in your efforts.
Write these things down at your lesson:
Write these things down each day between lessons:
- Lesson Date
- Scale(s) assigned
- Etude assigned
- Repertoire (piece you're working on) and what to focus on in it. For example, if you are just starting a piece, maybe you're focusing on learning the notes. If you've been working on it for a little while, maybe dynamics, intonation, or rhythm are your focus.
- Technical focus. These are more general in your playing, like having an open left wrist, bending your right thumb, or straight bowing.
- Music theory assignment
- Music history assignment
Write these things down each day between lessons:
- Date or day of the week
- What you worked on (scale, etude, repertoire) and how long/many times you practiced each one.
- Notes about your practicing, like what measures or technique you focused on.
- Questions you have about your music, how to play it, or other aspects of playing your instrument.
